Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is a statutory body established under the Uganda Wildlife Act Cap. 200 to economically develop and sustainably manage the wildlife and protected areas of Uganda, in partnership with neighboring communities and other stakeholders for the benefit of the people of Uganda and the global community. UWA manages ten (10) National Parks, twelve (12) Wildlife Reserves all referred to as Protected Areas as well as wildlife outside the Protected Areas.

UWA is a key partner in the Uganda Giants Club Conservation and Tourism Investment Initiative which was officially launched on 6th October 2017 by H.E. President of the Republic of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The initiative is supported by Space for Giants, UNDP and the African Wildlife Foundation. At the launch a number of opportunities for responsible tourism investment were promoted alongside an investment framework and incentives. UWA is now formally calling for expressions of interest for a selection of these investment opportunities.

Focus on Sustainable Conservation Tourism

UWA recognizes the role of a competitive and dynamic private sector to help achieve its conservation objectives and is mindful of the risk that inappropriate development could present to both the integrity of Protected Areas and the quality of Uganda's conservation tourism product —which must compete in a competitive global market for nature tourism.

As part of the Giants Club initiative UWA has committed to delivering a forward-looking sustainable tourism development vision for its Protected Areas; creating an enabling environment that supports especially high value, low impact tourism; delivering maximum economic returns to the country and to conservation while minimising negative impacts.

To deliver this vision UWA is seeking investors to enter concession agreements to develop and operate high quality sustainable conservation tourism facilities in a number of its most important Protected Areas. Concurrently, to enable this, UWA is committed to ensuring that such investments are supported by clear terms of engagement, high quality thresholds for new investment and transparent zoning through its management plans.

Who is eligible?

UWA invites initial Expressions of Interest (E0I) from prospective investors focused on an initial offering of sites across the country. To qualify, investors must meet the standards outlined in updated guidelines from the UWA Procurement and Disposal Unit. Applications are open to both local and international investors that meet the criteria.

Applications will be assessed, shortlisted and qualifying applicants invited to submit detailed proposals to be evaluated in accordance with the open international bidding procedure contained in the Government of Uganda Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Act, 2003.
